Wamatsi Pushes GMO Awareness in Kenya

Biosafety Authority to counter misinformation as debate over GMOs shapes food security and science policy.
Wamatsi leads NBA in public awareness to end GMO misinformation

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has announced plans to intensify GMO awareness efforts across Kenya, with Board Chairperson David Wamatsi saying misinformation continues to shape public perception of genetically modified organisms.

Wamatsi made the remarks during a team-building session for board members and senior management in Diani, Kwale County, where he outlined the Authority’s mandate and the need to strengthen public understanding of biosafety.

GMO Awareness Strategy Targets Misinformation

The GMO awareness initiative aims to address widespread misinformation around genetically modified organisms, which officials say affects policy discussions and adoption of scientific solutions.

According to Wamatsi, the Authority is responsible for regulating and overseeing the safe development, transfer, handling and use of GMOs in Kenya. He said the agency operates in a complex environment where public opinion, science and policy intersect.

He noted that questions around food security, climate resilience and health innovation are becoming more urgent. As a result, he said, Kenya’s agricultural transformation places the Authority at the centre of national debate.

GMO Awareness Linked to National Priorities

Wamatsi said the GMO awareness campaign aligns with broader national goals, including improving agricultural productivity and promoting science-driven solutions.

He added that public engagement is critical to ensuring that Kenyans understand the role of biotechnology in addressing food and environmental challenges.

“Together, we remain committed to promoting biosafety, transparency and meaningful public engagement,” he said.

Institutional Reforms and Governance Focus

The NBA chairperson also stressed the need for strong governance within the Authority. He said board members and staff must maintain high standards of professionalism, integrity and teamwork.

He added that the Authority will focus on strengthening internal systems, including continuous training and alignment with State Corporations Advisory Committee guidelines.

Wamatsi said effective board leadership will be key to guiding decision-making and ensuring the institution delivers on its mandate.

Team Building to Strengthen Coordination

The Diani session brought together directors and senior management to enhance collaboration and align strategic priorities. Officials said the exercise was designed to improve teamwork and service delivery.

Wamatsi said no single individual can deliver the Authority’s mandate alone, emphasising the importance of collective effort within the institution.

Outlook for GMO Awareness in Kenya

The GMO awareness push comes as Kenya continues to navigate debates over biotechnology and its role in agriculture and public health.

As the NBA expands public engagement, attention is likely to focus on how effectively the Authority can address misinformation and build trust among stakeholders.

The success of the initiative may influence future policy decisions and the adoption of biotechnology solutions in Kenya’s agricultural sector.
